About the Artist

Tongji Philip Qian

Tongji Philip Qian is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in Shanghai, China and currently lives and works around the globe. During his travels, he is particularly interested in responding to different environments and cultures by creating woodblock prints by hand.

His prints are influenced by the concept of the element of chance and he is devoted to finding chance ‘now’ and ‘here’.

Tongji Philip Qian is the recipient of several grants and fellowships including the Annual Artist Fellowship from Schloss Plüschow in Germany and the Dr. Judith Temple Grant from Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in the United States. Tongji Philip Qian received his Bachelor of Arts in art history and mathematics from Carleton College and his Advanced Certificate in studio art from New York University.

He has exhibited his works in China, Italy, the United States & two solo shows in India, at the Kriti Gallery and the Jaipur Art Summit 2016. He has also spent six months of last year as a resident artist at Kriti Gallery in Varanasi.

“Phil’s work is a beautiful merger of art & craft. The woodblocks itself are stunning pieces of art. Very few people today are doing this craft & this has made it more interesting for me to host his show at my Gallery. I have watched Phil chisel & create these beautiful woodblocks & seeing this has touched me. The effort is a journey by itself. The artist’s thinking had a synergy with Cosmic Heart & the final outcome is going to be unique.” — Jalpa H. Vithalani, Creative Head & Director, Cosmic Heart Gallery
