» Tibetan Medicine

Tibetan medicine (SOWA RIGPA – Science of healing) is a holistic form of medicine which alleviates disease and promotes health through herbal medicines, diet and lifestyle advice, manual body therapies, mental, emotional support and spiritual guidance.

Tibetan medicine is a science, art and philosophy that provides a holistic approach to health care. It is a science because its principles are enumerated in a systematic and logical framework based on an understanding of the body and its relationship to the environment. It is an art because it uses diagnostic techniques based on the creativity, insight, subtlety and compassion of the medical practitioner. And it is a philosophy because it embraces the key Buddhist principles of altruism, karma and ethics.

» His Holiness, The Dalai Lama on Tibetan Medicine

One of the factors common to all living beings is the basic wish to achieve happiness and avoid suffering. The desire for health, for complete physical and mental well-being, is an expression of this, for everyone wants to be well and no one wishes to be sick. When we fall ill we take whatever measures we can to help us recover. When we are unwell we not only feel miserable, but our ability to function normally is impaired.  Consequently, health is not a matter of merely personal interest, but a universal concern for which we all share some responsibility.

I believe that the Tibetan medical system can contribute substantially to maintaining a healthy mind and healthy body. Like the traditional Indian and Chinese systems, Tibetan medicine views health as a question of balance. A variety of circumstances such as diet, lifestyles, seasonal and mental conditions can disturb this natural balance, which gives rise to different kinds of disorders.

In diagnosing these disorders the Tibetan physician employs his own senses to examine the patient's pulses, urine and general appearance. He assesses the individual's general balance of health as a whole. Treatment involves dietary and behavioral advice, medication and accessory therapies. Medicines are obtained from natural sources such as herbs, minerals and organic products and prepared under controlled conditions. These ingredients are inexpensive and easily available. The medicines themselves have few side-effects, are not symptomatic and have a preventive as well as a curative effect.

Tibetan medicine is deeply integrated with Buddhist practice and theory which stresses the indivisible interdependence of mind, body and vitality. The ideal doctor is one who combines sound medical understanding with strong realization of wisdom and compassion.

I strongly believe that our medical system is one of the means by which we Tibetans can contribute to the well-being of others, even while we ourselves live as refugees.

» Tibetan Medicine History

The Tibetan medical system is one of the world's oldest known medical traditions. It is an integral part of Tibetan culture and has been developed through many centuries. We believe that the origin of the Tibetan medical tradition is as old as civilization itself.

In order to preserve and expand Tibetan medicine, the Great Thirteenth Dalai Lama (1876-1933) in 1897 appointed Tekhang Jampa Thubwang and Jabung Damchoe Palden as his senior and junior physicians respectively, and ordered them to teach selected students. Khyenrab Norbu, Tenpa Yarphel and Tsultrim Nyandrag were chosen from Chagpori Medical College to study under the senior physician and they received teachings on rGyud-bZhi and its various commentaries such as Vaidurya sNgon-po (The Blue Lapis Lazuli). Khyenrab Norbu also learned medicine, astrology, poetry and grammar. He was named "Yangchen rgyas pai Lodoe" as an honour to his hard work. When he was 29, in the Iron Dog year (1912), he took responsibility of the Medical Clinic at Drepung Monastery - to maintain the health of the monks. He began writing books and doing research on Tibetan Medicine. The Great Thirteenth Dalai Lama, established Lhasa Men-Tsee-Khang in the year of the Fire Dragon, 1916. Dr. Khyenrab Norbu was appointed to the post of Junior Physician to H. H. The Dalai Lama in 1918 and spent his entire life promoting Tibetan culture, especially medicine and astrology.

In order to preserve and promote the richness of Tibetan culture, many institutions, monasteries and schools were re-established in India under the auspices of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astro. Institute of H.H. the Dalai Lama) was re-established under the visionary guidance of His Holiness the 14th Dalai

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama says, “Siva Rigpa’ Traditional Tibetan Medicine, which comes under five major sciences addresses the need of mind and spirit, but mainly the physical illness of the body. It has helped and continues to help many people.”

» Medicine Buddha

The medicine Buddha, the Teacher of Medicine and the king of Lapis Lazuli Light (Bhaishajyaguru, Sangye Menla, Vaidurya).

His radiant body is azure blue. His left hand is in the meditation mudra and holds a begging bowl full of long life nectar in his lap. As a sign that he gives protection from illness, his right hand is outstretched in the gesture of giving and holds the "great medicine", the myrobalan plant (a-ru-ra).

Following verses is reprint from Chagmed Rinpoche's Hymn in Praise of the Medicinal Buddha

Namo Maha Beshajeya

Honor to the Great Medicinal Buddha!
Whoever due to wrong ideas and attitudes
Is bound to fall into states of suffering
If he even hears the sound of your sacred name,
He will not be reborn in sorrow
And will reach the state of immaculate Purity.

Medicine Buddha Mantra
"Om Namo Bhagavate Beishajaye Guru Vaidurya Prabha
Rajaya Tathagataya Arahate Samayak Sam Buddhaya
Tadyatha Om Beishajaye Beishajaye Maha Beishajaye Beishajaye
Rajaya Samungate Svaha”
