HEIRLOOM ART-Unveiling the Legacy of Raja Ravi Varma
URVASHI A peerless beauty and one of the four celestial dancers of Indra's court, Urvashi fell in love with the mighty king Pururavas. The lovelorn Urvashi was banished from Heaven by Sage Bharata when she unknowingly uttered the name of Pururavas while dancing. Lord Indra told her that she had to return to her abode, the moment Pururavas saw the child born to them. They both lived for many years in the Gandhamadana gardens and valleys. On their return to the kingdom, Purravas happened to see his son Ayush, born to Urvashi. Ayush was born to Urvashi in secrecy during their stay in the gardens. The ordained moment had come for Urvashi to leave Pururavas which is depicted here. Urvashi is already one step into the sky while Pururavas is beseeching her to stay with him. Urvashi II | 14" x 10" MOHINI Mohini III | 20" x 14" Mohini or the Temptress, as revealed in the Hindu puranic episodes, is a female spirit who would haunt young, unmarried men. She is believed to be eternally young, beautiful, and alluring. She would be roaming in solitary places in search of young men, and would always be clad in a white saree with loose hair. In this marvelous scene, Mohini is playing on a swing, hung from a single tall tree in a solitary meadow. The panoramic background landscape is exquisitely portrayed.
